Downloading data via FTP

When you register you will be granted access both to the Web data portal and to the FTP site. Separate confirmation is sent that access has been granted for FTP downloading.

To reach the FTP site:

 ftp ftp-esg.ucllnl.org

Use the same username and password you provided during the portal registration process.

FTP vs. portal access

Downloading data via FTP may provide faster download times. The main advantage of FTP is that you can download multiple files with a single mget operation.

On the other hand, the portal provides more search and browse capability than does FTP. You may find it useful to start browsing via the portal to get a sense of what data is available, and how it is structured, then use FTP for higher volume data transfers.

FTP site map

Each directory has the following template:

/project/scenario/submodel/frequency/variable/model/run

where

project is the project identifier:

Project Identifier
IPCC 4th Assessment Report ipcc
Cloud Feedback Model Intercomparison Project cfmip

scenario is the scenario identifier:

Project Scenario/Experiment Identifier
ipcc 1%/year CO2 increase (to doubling) 1pctto2x
ipcc 1%/year CO2 increase (to quadrupling) 1pctto4x
ipcc 2xCO2 equilibrium 2xco2
ipcc 550 ppm stabilization (SRES B1) sresb1
ipcc 720 ppm stabilization (SRES A1B) sresa1b
ipcc AMIP amip
ipcc SRES A2 sresa2
ipcc Climate of the 20th Century 20c3m
ipcc Committed climate change commit
ipcc Pre-industrial control picntrl
ipcc Present-day control pdcntrl
ipcc Slab ocean control slabcntl
cfmip Slab ocean control slabcntl
cfmip 2xCO2 equilibrium 2xco2

submodel is a submodel identifier:

Submodel Identifier
Atmosphere atm
Ice ice
Land surface land
Ocean ocn

frequency is a temporal frequency ID:

Frequency Identifier
3-Hourly 3h
Daily da
Fixed (no time dependency) fixed
Monthly mo
Yearly yr

variable is the IPCC variable name, or CFMIP variable name.

model is a model identifier, and

run is a run identifer, such as 'run1', 'run2', etc. This distinguishes individual members of an ensemble.

Example:

The monthly mean cloud area fraction data for the IPCC 4AR Climate of the 20th Century experiment, GISS AOM C4x3 model, run 1, is located at:

/ipcc/20c3m/atm/mo/clt/giss_aom/run1/clt_A1.nc
